Abstract

The coast is a buffer zone against tsunami, tidal wave, flood and erosion hazards. In general, coastal areas have aspects of ecological provision, hazard buffering and human use. Degradation of coastal habitats can lead to a decrease in the function of the beach as a natural defence and increase the risk of flooding. One way or method used to protect the coast is with artificial reefs.   Artificial reefs are man-made structures designed to mimic the ecological functions of natural coral reefs. They play a key role in protecting coastlines from marine abrasion, providing habitat for marine life, as well as increasing biodiversity. The material often used in making artificial coral reefs is concrete.  Concrete is a mixture of cement, sand, gravel, and water that is extremely strong and resistant to corrosion. These properties make it a top choice for underwater structures that require long-term durability.
